Lots of people want to make the world a better place, but our Sages teach us that fixing the world starts by looking inward first. In fact, the holy Arizal teaches that man is a miniature universe. If so, how can we bring tikkun (spiritual rectification) into our own lives? Rebbe Nachman gives us some attainable, practical advice...
Tikkun HaKlali, or the "General Remedy," is a set of ten specific Tehillim (Psalms) revealed by Rebbe Nachman of Breslov as a powerful spiritual rectification, especially for sins related to personal purity. Rebbe Nachman taught that these ten Psalms—16, 32, 41, 42, 59, 77, 90, 105, 137, and 150—have a unique ability to repair spiritual damage caused by improper thoughts and actions.
The Rebbe emphasized that reciting these Psalms with sincerity and thoughts of teshuva can purify the soul, restore spiritual vitality, and bring a person closer to Hashem. The Zohar and the Arizal HaKodesh write about the particularly difficult path of teshuva for rectifying one's personal purity, which might lead a person to despair, thinking that they cannot correct their mistakes, G-d forbid. Fortunately, for our generation Rebbe Nachman revealed Tikkun HaKlali as a direct and accessible path to teshuvah!
Rebbe Nachman also connected Tikkun HaKlali to the concept of simcha. He taught that one of the greatest obstacles to spiritual growth is sadness and despair. By reciting these Psalms, a person can break free from negativity and reconnect with Divine energy.
Many Breslov Chassidim recite Tikkun HaKlali daily, and it is widely accepted that saying it at the gravesite of a tzaddik, particularly Rebbe Nachman’s own kever in Uman, has an even greater spiritual effect.
So if you want to help fix the world, a great place to start is by bringing healing into your own life by reciting Tikkun HaKlali!
